Lot 5180
Johannes, 6th-7th centuries. Seal (Lead, 24 mm, 10.54 g, 6 h). Draped bust of a bearded and slightly balding man to the left. Rev. Cruciform monogram of IⲰANNOV. Unpublished in the standard references. An exceptional early Byzantine seal with a magnificent portrait of fine style. Extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Some seals of the 6th and 7th centuries show a very similar depiction of St. Paul as part of a double portrait with St. Peter (see Zacos/Veglery 1261-1271, 2967-2969).
